J-PAL Europe Advanced Executive Education Course
Paris, July 2-4, 2012
J-PAL Europe is organizing a three-day course, led by affiliated professors from J-PAL, which will teach participants how to measure the effects of poverty programs scientifically and help shape better policies through the use of randomized evaluations.


The course is designed for participants that are already familiar with economics and econometrics. Through both lectures and group work participants will be given a thorough understanding of the following topics:
1. How to design an experiment

  • Methods of randomization
  • Linking experimental design and theory
  • Sample size


2. How to implement an experiment

  • Finding funding
  • Working with partner organizations
  • Data collection (including innovative methods of data collection)
  • Pitfalls to avoid


3. Analyzing data from an experiment

  • Average effects
  • Heterogeneity of treatment effects
  • Treatment on the treated
  • Structural estimation


This course will be held in English at the Maison des Sciences Economiques (MSE) in Paris from July 2 to July 4. Participants must apply by April 30, 2012.
