In 1981, Gary S. Becker (Professor at the University of Chicago and 1992 Nobel Prize in Economics) published the Treatise on the Family, with an enlarged edition in 1991. This insightful contribution has put the family on the economists’ research agenda. Ideas developed in the Treatise have deeply influenced and shaped research in the economics of the family. Thirty years on, Gary S. Becker’s ideas are still influential, even though sometimes criticized or substantially modified, and the economic approach to the family is a very active area of economic research.
In recognition of the 30th anniversary of the Treatise on the Family, the French National Demographic institute (INED), Paris School of Economics (PSE), the Ecole Normale Supérieure de Cachan, and the University of Cergy-Pontoise are organising an international conference on the ‘Economics of the Family’, to be held in Paris on October 6, 7 and 8, 2011. The Nobel Prize Gary S. Becker will deliver a talk during the conference.
