PSE Summer School 2017: applications are open

The PSE Summer School offers research-oriented teaching by leading experts in their fields. These started in 2016 with four topics that brought together over a hundred participants from all over the world. The participants rated the programmes 3.5 out of 4 on average (regarding course contents, professors and organization). This first successful round has encouraged PSE to continue developing its Summer School in 2017.

During 3 weeks, from June 19^th to July 7^th, the 2017 PSE Summer School will propose ten programs. It will take place in Paris. It is aimed at professionals, researchers, as well as graduate students in Economics and Finance (Masters and PhD). Undergraduate students in Economics will be considered only if their profile is exceptionally strong.

Ten programs in 2017

Entirely run in English, the PSE Summer School in 2017 proposes ten one-week programs. Each offers a full-time mix of courses and tutorials, essentially taught by PSE professors.

From June 19^th to June 23^rd 2017

>> CLIMATE CHANGE - Impacts, modeling and regulation

The impact of climate change on the economy and its appropriate regulation have emerged as central themes in public economics. This program aims to teach participants the latest progress in research on the topic and to familiarize them with the relevant methods used to analyze the issues.

>> MACROECONOMICS - Macroeconomics useful for Policy

This program tackles topics at the frontier of policy-relevant research: recessions and liquidity traps; crises and bubbles; heterogeneity and financial frictions; regulation and macroprudential policy; information imperfections; and international linkages. It also includes a quantitative module, covering state-of-the-art quantitative and numerical techniques relevant for solving macroeconomic models.

>> MICROECONOMETRICS - Policy Evaluation Programme

The Policy Evaluation programme presents recent developments in the microeconomic analysis of impact evaluation through two courses. Providing a credible estimation of a causal effect has become a standard in economic analysis, both in research papers and policy reports. But it is also equally important to integrate the estimated effects into economic models, in order to improve the design of policies. The Professors here will propose a comprehensive approach of policy analysis.

>> MIGRATION ECONOMICS - Migration challenges in global labor markets

Immigration is a major aspect of globalization and is increasingly at the centre of the public and policy debate. This program aims to analyze topics such as the effects of migration on other dimensions of globalization (trade, FDI, technology diffusion, socio-cultural norms and so on), capital accumulation, growth, and natives’ labor market outcomes. It also investigates the barriers to immigrants’ assimilation. The program combines the analysis of the main theoretical models in the migration literature with the most recent and rigorous empirical evidence.

>> DEVELOPMENT - Inequality, social interactions, and institutional dynamics in development

Institutions and social frictions - associated with inequalities, political conflicts, corruption, and cultural polarization - have emerged as central themes in development economics. Based on both formal theory and rigorous empirical research, this program draws the outlines of the current research frontier.

>> EXPERIMENTAL ECONOMICS - Empirical tools and methods to investigate economic behavior

The objective of this program is to offer a crash course in experimental methods and techniques aimed at understanding economic behavior: how to design, implement and analyze an experiment so to answer a research question. The Professors will discuss the following topics: general methodology (theory, validity, lab and field, replication, and purposes), tools (incentives, risk and time, design and instructions, software, physiological measures, experimetrics,etc.) and applications (case study and participants’ projects).

>> HEALTH - Economic analysis of health policy: Equity and efficiency issues

This program is designed to provide an overview of concepts and techniques essential for the analysis of health policies, at the frontier of health economics research. The Professors will discuss the following topics, centered on health policies: economic preferences and behavior, demand and supply of health care, health care funding, health inequalities and subjective well-being.

>> TRADE - Globalization and the Ricardian revival

This class addresses recent debates at the frontier of the field: the unbundling of production processes, the distributive effects of trade, the role of large firms in the global economy and finally Ricardo revisited.

From July 3^rd to July 7^th 2017

>> BOUNDED RATIONALITY AND BEHAVIORAL ECONOMICS - A review of recent approaches

Standard economics has been the subject of muc criticism. Mainstream economic models and analysis rely on a level of sophistication that is hard to justify from an introspective viewpoint but also considering the large body of experimental evidence. Recent years have witnessed a flurry of alternative approaches. The program proposes reviewing a large body of these approaches, with the hope of stimulating new research, both theoretical and applied.

>> INDUSTRIAL ORGANIZATION - Markets strategy, firms’ performance and regulation

This program will consist of three main topics in Industrial Organization: Economics of Platforms, Competition Policy and new empirical aspects of industry dynamics and productivity. The courses offer a blend of theory and empirics.
