The World Wealth and Income Database - WID
Presented for the first time in January 2011 during the conference by T. Atkinson and T. Piketty given at PSE within the G-MonD, the World Top Incomes Database (WTID) has since experienced growing success.
Built to accompany the publishing of the two books Top Incomes over the XXth Century (2007, Oxford University Press) and Top Incomes : a Global Perspective (2010, Oxford University Press), the World Top Incomes Database offers the most comprehensive set of historical series on high-income inequality available so far. It is managed by Facundo Alvaredo, Tony Atkinson, Thomas Piketty and Emmanuel Saez in cooperation with dozen of researchers all around the world.
In 2013, Thomas Piketty has published the Capital in the XXIst century largely based on datas from the WTID; this book has since then met a tremendous succes all around the world and is now translated in more than 37 languages.
The results presented in thees books and the website have considerably renewed our knowledge of the long run dynamics of inequality. In particular, they radically question Kuznets’ optimistic hypothesis on the interplay between economic development and the distribution of income.
At the end of 2015, the WTID became WID.world, with more extensive dataset and covering around 30 countries, 40 more being in progress.
