    The Foundation Banque de France, together with the French institutions listed below, is organizing the 4th Joint French Macro Workshop on June 5, 2013. The goal of this workshop is to bring together European macroeconomists to discuss current research frontiers on a regular basis. To encourage participation from young economists, we aim to reserve 50% of the presentation for economists who have completed their PhD’s no more than 6 years ago.
    Applications from economists from all European institutions are welcomed in all fields of macroeconomics. Theoretical and empirical contributions are equally welcome. The keynote speaker will be George-Marios Angeletos (MIT).
    The workshop is a one day event which will take place at Toulouse School of Economics (Toulouse) on Wednesday, June 5
    Submission of papers
    Potential presenters should submit their paper in electronic form (PDF format) to jointmacro gmail.com by March 29, 2013. The authors of accepted papers will be notified by April 19, 2013.

This conference will bring together the authors of the more than 20 chapters of this second volume and will cover all areas of income distribution where important advances have recently taken place and new knowledge is being accumulated.

    DANIEL KAHNEMAN (Princeton University)
    In their recent book, Thaler and Sunstein presented the competing images of the Econ and the Human. The Econ is the rational and selfish agent assumed in economic theory. Humans are people as they are, and they are quite different from Econs. One of the main differences is that Econs make judgments and decisions that are consistent, stable and governed by a broad view of the situation, which includes the anticipated future. Humans are different along all these dimensions. 
    The talk will present a view of the Human mind, and examine some of the consequences of this view for economics and for policy

    Submission of papers
    Interested authors submit a draft of their paper in electronic form (PDF format) at jointmacro gmail.com by October 10. The authors of accepted papers will be notified October 15.

    • Les présentations, faites par des chercheurs du Centre d’Economie de la Sorbonne, auront pour objet d’éveiller la curiosité des lycéens sur le monde actuel et à venir et de les sensibiliser aux problèmes économiques autour de grands thèmes choisis en concertation avec les inspecteurs pédagogiques.
      C’est aussi l’occasion de susciter de futurs projets de poursuite d’étude dans les filières économiques proposées à l’Université.
    • Ce projet piloté en étroite collaboration par le CES et les académies de Créteil, Paris et Versailles a pour vocation de devenir une manifestation annuelle.

    6-8 octobre, Conférence sur l’économie de la famille

    En 1981, Gary S. Becker, professeur d’économie à l’Université de Chicago et lauréat du prix Nobel d’économie en 1992, a publié son ouvrage fondateur intitulé A Treatise on the Family, avec une édition élargie en 1991. Suite à cette contribution majeure, les économistes ont mené des programmes de recherche sur le thème de la famille. Ainsi, les idées développées dans son traité ont profondément influencé et façonné la recherche sur l’économie de la famille. Trente ans plus tard, les idées de Gary S. Becker sont toujours influentes, même si elles sont parfois critiquées ou substantiellement modifiées, et l’approche économique de la famille reste toujours un domaine très actif de la recherche économique.
    A l’occasion du 30e anniversaire du Traité sur la famille, l’Institut National d’Etudes Démographiques (INED), l’Ecole de Paris d’Economie, l’Ecole Normale Supérieure de Cachan et l’Université de Cergy-Pontoise organisent une conférence internationale sur « l’économie de la famille », qui se tiendra à Paris les 6, 7 et 8 octobre 2011. Gary S. Becker nous honorera de sa présence à cette occasion ; il prendra la parole pour une conférence plénière et participera également à un débat sur les grands enjeux de politique économique sous l’éclairage de l’économie de la famille.

    Depuis plusieurs années, et de façon encore plus accrue depuis la crise de 2008, les modèles structurants d’analyses des agents - plus précisément de leurs anticipations – semblent incomplets voire selon certains dépassés.
    Animé par Pierre-Yves Geoffard, un débat (en anglais) réunira sur ce sujet Roman Frydman (Professeur à NYU) et Roger Guesnerie, deux spécialistes reconnus de la question des anticipations rationnelles. Ils aborderont nombre de thèmes :

    • Que penser de la performance de la profession (ndlr : des économistes) dans la compréhension de la dernière crise ?
    • Que faut-il mettre en cause, la rationalité des agents ou celle des anticipations ?
    • Evaluation de la modélisation standard des anticipations (anticipations rationnelles), assez bonne ou très médiocre ?
    • Le cas des taux de change et marchés financiers
    • L’hypothèse d’anticipations rationnelles est-elle inégalement plausible & non-plausible ?

    Le G-MonD de PSE-Ecole d’économie de Paris a le plaisir de vous inviter sur le Campus Jourdan le 20 janvier à 16h à une conférence de Tony B. ATKINSON et Thomas PIKETTY à l’occasion de la publication du livre « Top Incomes : a Global Perspective » (Oxford University Press).
    Dans ce nouvel opus, les auteurs analysent l’évolution sur longue période de la part des hauts et très hauts revenus dans 12 nouveaux pays (après les 10 étudiés dans l’ouvrage de 2007). L’ensemble renouvelle profondément les connaissances existantes sur la dynamique des inégalités, et remet radicalement en cause l’hypothèse optimiste de Kuznets sur le lien entre développement économique et répartition des revenus.

    The structure of the world economy and the interaction between overall world growth and development has been changing. The great crisis of 2008 underlined global interdependence. It is also clear, however, that many developing countries weathered the crisis much better than many advanced countries. Looking ahead, are we finally entering the age of convergence ? Which factors are going to cause convergence or divergence ? What do these structural factors imply for development cooperation, the pursuit of the MDGs and global economic cooperation ?

    The lecture is a part of the 2nd series of “Kapuscinski Lectures”, named for Ryszard Kapuscinski, a Polish reporter and writer who covered developing countries. Experts from around the world deliver lectures on development and development cooperation at universities across the European Union.     Abstract
    The International Monetary Fund (IMF), in association with the Paris School of Economics, is presenting the Fall 2010 IMF World Economic Outlook (WEO) and the European Regional Economic Outlook (REO). The presentation will take place on October 22, 2010, at the Paris School of Economics. The event will bring together policy-makers, academics, journalists, staff from international organizations and selected representatives of civil society, to discuss the key macroeconomic challenges going forward. It will provide an opportunity for the press to report on the newly released Regional Outlook.
    With strong policy action to contain sovereign debt problems in the euro area, the recovery continues. But lingering uncertainties and market pressures make for moderate and unequal growth across advanced Europe. The October 2010 issue of the REO : Europe discusses the outlook and the short term challenges it creates for macroeconomic and financial sector policies. It also sheds light on the governance issues revealed by the crisis, arguing that better policy frameworks, in particular at the euro area level, promise a stronger Europe.
    The presentation will then focus on fiscal issues, based on the WEO chapter “Will it Hurt ? Macroeconomic Effects of Fiscal Consolidation.” The chapter examines the effects of fiscal consolidation—tax hikes and government spending cuts—on economic activity. The empirical analysis finds that fiscal consolidation typically reduces output and raises unemployment in the short term. At the same time, interest rate cuts, a fall in the value of the currency, and a rise in net exports usually soften the contractionary impact. Consolidation is more painful when it relies primarily on tax hikes ; this occurs largely because central banks typically provide less monetary stimulus during such episodes, particularly when they involve indirect tax hikes that raise inflation. Also, fiscal consolidation is more costly when the perceived risk of sovereign default is low. These findings suggest that budget deficit cuts are likely to be more painful if they occur simultaneously across many countries, and if monetary policy is not in a position to offset them. Over the long term, reducing government debt is likely to raise output, as real interest rates decline and the lighter burden of interest payments permits cuts to distortionary taxes.

    • Helge Berger is Deputy Division chief in the Euro Area and EU Policies Division of the IMF’s European Department. He received his Ph.D. and the venia legendi for economics from University of Munch. He holds the chair of monetary economics at Free University Berlin (on leave), where he has also served as Associate Dean. He has previously taught at Princeton University as a John Foster Dulles Visiting Lecturer, served as Research Director of the Munich-based CESifo network, and has been a visiting scholar at the European Central Bank, the IMF, and various academic institutions.
    • Rupa Duttagupta is the Deputy Division Chief in the World Economic Studies Division of the IMF’s Research Department. She holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Maryland in the United States. Prior to joining the Research Department, she worked on several emerging, developing and advanced economies spanning the IMF’s Asia and Pacific, Monetary and Capital Markets, Western Hemisphere, and Strategy, Policy and Review Departments. Her research interests include international trade and finance issues with a focus on emerging market economies.
    • Fabrizio Coricelli is currently Professor of Economics at Université Paris 1, Panthéon-Sorbonne. He is also Research Fellow at Paris School of Economics and CEPR. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. Before his current appointment, he worked at the International Monetary Fund and at the World Bank in Washington for six years. He also worked as Economic Advisor at the European Commission in Brussels and as Director for Policy Studies at EBRD in London.

    3rd International Conference MIGRATION & DEVELOPMENT

    Paris School of Economics (PSE), the French Development Agency Research Department (AFD) and the World Bank International Migration and Development Program are jointly organizing the third international conference on “Migration and Development” - 10 & 11, september 2010.

    The conference is devoted to investigating channels through which migration affects economic outcomes of developing countries. Possible topics include social networks and diaspora externalities, remittances, return migration, migration and the pattern of trade/FDI, brain drain, migration and institutional/technological change, migration and regional/urban development, and the effect of emigration on poverty, inequality, and human capital (education, health) formation in developing countries.

    A selection of papers from the conference will be considered for publication in a special issue of Regional Science and Urban Economics.

    Ce workshop international vise à confronter les derniers travaux en matière d’analyse des politiques commerciales. La libéralisation commerciale est au coeur des réformes économiques dans de nombreux pays. Evaluer les effets micro-économiques de l’intégration au commerce mondial sur les performances économiques et les décisions des entreprises s’avère crucial pour comprendre les mouvements plus globaux. Les travaux présentés utilisent des données à l’échelle des produits ou des entreprises. Ce workshop, co organisé par le CEPII et PSE-EEP est composé de 4 sessions comprenant 2 papiers invités et 4 autres papiers.

    3 juin 2010 : conférence de Pranab K. Bardhan

    D’origine indienne, Pranab K. Bardhan est professeur d’économie à l’université de Berkeley depuis 1977. Reconnu comme l’un des experts mondiaux en matière de développement, il a été rédacteur en chef du Journal of Development Economics de 1985 à 2003. Ses travaux conjuguent recherche théorique et études terrain, et portent sur les institutions en milieu rural dans les pays en développement, les enjeux économiques des politiques de développement et le commerce international. Un partie de son travail se situe dans le champ interdisciplinaire de l’économie, de la science politique et de l’anthropologie sociale.

    Sudhir Venkatesh et Shamus Khan présenteront leur nouveau projet de recherche sur l’organisation sociale et historique des élites mondiales. Tant Khan que Venkatesh sont intéressés par l’intersection de la reproduction socio-culturelle - dans ce cas, d’une « élite » - et des pratiques matérielles. Venkatesh explorera ce lien en examinant la façon dont la confiance et le régulation apparaissent au sein de l’économie souterraine. Le terrain empirique de sa présentation portera tant sur les quartiers pauvres de Chicago, connus pour une grande pauvreté et l’activité de ses gangs, que sur les quartiers riches de l’Upper East Side de New York. Des éléments empiriques sur les activités clandestines dans les deux contextes sociaux seront présentés. Khan a fait une recherche ethnographique approfondie de la socialisation des élites mondiales dans le secondaire et le supérieur. Il discutera de la façon dont les jeunes hommes et les jeunes femmes des milieux privilégiés fortunés gèrent les défis juridiques et les conflits personnels à l’extérieur de l’orbite de l’Etat. Ce rejet de l’autorité publique par les jeunes élites est en quelque sorte homologue à l’expérience des pauvres de Chicago étudiées par Venkatesh. Ces similitudes ainsi que quelques différences clés permettront à Khan et Venkatesh d’analyser les transformations des élites mondiales.

    SUMMARY

    Japan’s fiscal situation has deteriorated drastically since the 1990s. In this seminar, Hiroko Ota will first discuss the factors behind this deterioration. Then, she will review public finance reforms in Japan since the Koizumi Cabinet. Next, the problems of public finance management in the current administration will be highlighted. Finally, the speaker will argue important reforms for fiscal consolidation.

    La Chaire Banque de France de l’Ecole d’économie de Paris et le Fonds Monétaire International organisent une conférence sur le thème « Economic Linkages, Spillovers and the Financial Crisis », qui se tiendra à Paris les 28 et 29 janvier 2010.

    Cette conférence rassemblera des universitaires et des praticiens spécialistes des questions économiques internationales, comme celles relatives aux déséquilibres mondiaux, au commerce international, aux cycles d’affaires globaux, et à la crise financière.

    Une table ronde, présidée par Jean-Pierre Landau, clôturera ces deux journées de travail et réunira Olivier Blanchard, François Bourguignon, Daniel Cohen, Jean-Luc Schneider et Beatrice Weder di Mauro. Cette séance, temps d’échanges privilégié entre intervenants et participants, sera suivie à partir de 16h30 d’un cocktail.
