In August 2018 Daniel Cohen’s “Il faut dire que les temps ont changé...” Chronique (fiévreuse) d’une mutation qui inquiète appeared, in which he evoked the difficulties that the rise of populism is creating for both the left and the right. One year later, Les Origines du populisme - Enquête sur un schisme politique et social, written with Yann Algan, Elizabeth Beasley and Martial Foucault, was published by Éditions du Seuil. Its aim is to shed light on the origins of the growth of populism in France and around the world, based on an analysis of comprehensive data bases, including those of the CEVIPOF. They identified two major causes: a manifest mistrust of political parties and institutions, and society characterised by the déclassement of individuals.
