Globalization Chair
Presentation
After 30 years of hypergrowth and deepening supported by trade liberalization, technological developments and a calmer geopolitical context, trade is hardly increasing at all, or at least less rapidly than production. The new context of renewed international geo-political tensions, strategic rivalries and health crises makes trade interdependence appear more as a source of vulnerability than as a guarantee of mutual gains.
In order to deepen our understanding of the new deal of globalization and its implications, CMA CGM has joined forces with the Paris School of Economics to launch the Globalization Research Chair.

Activities
Several activities are on the chair’s agenda:
- Scientific and public events: research seminars, international conferences and thematic workshops, annual conference of the chair;
- The development and promotion of research work to be published in the best scientific journals, notably through a dedicated series of Policy briefs;
- A post-doc funding: the chair supports the development of research potential by financing postdoctoral fellowships on issues about globalization;
- Inviting researchers on short stays to participate in research and teaching activities;
- The development of high-level courses: organization of master class and support to the Summer School “International trade”;
- The drafting of an annual activity report.
Objectives
This chair is structured around three axes:
- identifying the mechanisms at work in this new situation, in particular the respective roles of political, geostrategic and technological developments
- quantify the reorganizations underway in production, supply and marketing practices in the new context of increased risk (diversification, relocation, tangible and intangible investment)
- identify effective strategies from the point of view of both companies and public authorities, according to different objectives (productive efficiency, technological leadership, economic resilience, well-being).
The Globalization Chair aims to create a privileged forum for reflection, exchange and transfer between researchers and all entities of society interested in the reconfiguration of globalization and its implications.
The approach favored by the chair is empirical. The research is characterized by the use of advanced econometric techniques and the exploitation of various databases combining data from companies, but also more recent sources from the media, NGOs or the monitoring of container ships.

Steering Committee
To coordinate its work, the chair has set up a steering committee made up of the Chair holder, Sandra Poncet and of the Director of PSE, Jean-Olivier Hairault. It is also composed of partner’s representatives, Michel Sirat (Chief Financial Officer at CMA CGM) and TANGRAM.

The objective is to bring together all those who wish to collaborate to co-create the new rules of the game of tomorrow: CMA CGM Group employees, start-ups, major groups, universities, research centers, etc.
In January 2024, a new site will open its doors in an exceptional location at the Pointe Rouge in Marseille.
