The Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL) Europe

J-PAL Europe is one of the seven regional offices of J-PAL (MIT), a global research centre focused on conducting randomised impact evaluations to answer critical questions in the fight against poverty. Hosted at the Paris School of Economics, J-PAL Europe conducts randomised evaluations, builds partnerships for evidence-informed policymaking and helps partners scale up effective programmes.

With a network of affiliated professors based across Europe and beyond, J-PAL Europe partners with governments and civil society actors to conduct rigorous impact evaluations of social programmes in Europe. The team also works with J-PAL offices around the globe to help inform the work of European development actors.

In Europe, J-PAL research spans various sectors, with a focus on education, labour and issues related to migration. For an overview of the research conducted by J-PAL affiliates in Europe to date, please visit: https://www.povertyactionlab.org/page/evidence-social-policy-europe

J-PAL translates research into action, promoting a culture of evidence-informed policymaking around the world. J-PAL’s Policy & Communications team disseminates the main lessons and policy implications from completed research to help bring evidence closer to policy making across Europe.

In addition to research and policy outreach, J-PAL Europe also hosts online courses, trainings and customised workshops for policymakers and programme implementers on the use of randomised evaluations. In 2019, J-PAL Europe launched the European Social Inclusion Initiative (ESII), a research and policy initiative hosted at PSE that aims to answer some of the most pressing questions in Europe today related to social inclusion. For the most recent list of funded projects, please see here.

Innovation, Data, and Experiments in Education

In 2021, we launched the Innovation, Data, and Experiments in Education (IDEE), a long-term investment to develop the infrastructure for experimental research in education, aiming to make France a leader in the field. IDEE is coordinated by the Ecole Normale Supérieure/PSL and led by J-PAL Europe at PSE, with funding from the French National Research Agency (Agence Nationale de la Recherche, ANR) under the “Investissements d’avenir” programme.
