Christian Thimann is Chairman of the Management Board at Athora Insurance Holding Germany.

From 2014-2018 he was Senior Executive at the AXA Group, Paris. He held the positions of Group Head of Strategy, Sustainability and Public Affairs and Member of the Executive Committee, and Group Head of Regulation, Sustainablility and Insurance Foresight. He was also on the Board of Directors of Alliance Bernstein Investment Management, New York, and AXA Investment Managers, Paris. 

During 2017/2018, in addition to his responsibilities at AXA, he chaired the EU High-Level Expert Group on Sustainable Finance for the European Commission and was Vice-Chair of the FSB Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (chair: Michael Bloomberg). 

Until 2013, he was Director General and Adviser to the President at the European Central Bank (ECB) in Frankfurt. Before joining the ECB, he was a staff member of the International Monetary Fund in Washington, D.C.

He holds a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Munich and a M.Sc. from the London School of Economics, and has published in academic journals as well as general interest papers on insurance, international money and finance and European integration.
