T. Breda - Trop fortes en français pour étudier les maths ? (décembre 2019)

Les différences de performance en mathématiques entre les sexes sont désormais faibles dans les pays développés et elles ne permettent pas d’expliquer à elles seules la forte sous-représentation des femmes dans les domaines liés aux mathématiques.

Thomas Breda (CNRS/PSE) et Clotilde Napp (Dauphine), en utilisant des données individuelles sur 300 000 élèves de 15 ans dans 64 pays, éclairent le débat d’un jour nouveau en prenant également en compte les performances en lettres. Ils montrent que les filles sont beaucoup plus souvent que les garçons meilleures en lettres qu’en mathématiques et qu’elles se projettent ainsi davantage comme littéraire qu’en tant que scientifique. Cet « avantage comparatif » des filles en lettres par rapport aux mathématiques explique ainsi, selon les chercheurs, presque intégralement les différences de rapport au mathématiques entre les deux sexes (intérêt déclaré pour les mathématiques, confiance en soi en mathématiques, etc.) et 75% de l’écart en termes d’intention d’orientation ou de carrière liées aux mathématiques.
