Since October 2020, I have been in charge of administering the OPReF survey. The fieldwork started in mid-October 2020 and ended in mid-May 2021. The current period is dedicated to data processing.  I succeeded Sarah Schneider-Strawczynski.

The survey was administered in 9 languages to a representative sample of 2,700 people throughout France to understand the origins, migration pathways and perspectives of immigrants who have been accorded international protection by France.

Themes explored: conditions of arrival in France, family and relationship structure, language skills, education and training, living in the country of origin, working life in the country of origin, migration pathway, projects in France, self-assessed health, values and aspirations.

Research assistants: Maël Astruc, Max Molaro, Maxime Pirot.

The questionnaire is self-administered in paper format and contains around sixty questions. The languages available at the launch of the survey (November 2020) are Arabic, Bangala, Dari, English, French, Lingala and Pashto.  Russian and Tigrigna were made available in February 2021. The fieldwork took place in two waves: from 18/11/2020 to 05/02/2021 and from 08/03/2021 to 30/04/2021.

    • Extraction from the ADN-NG database was carried out by the French Office for Immigration and Integration (OFII) on 19/10/2020 (updated on 16/10): the entire population is observed, 890 centres accommodate 18,436 ICPEs in metropolitan France excluding Corsica.
    • Sampling was carried out on 20/10 by the Department of Statistics, Studies and Documentation (DSED) at centre level: 378 centres were selected, hosting 10,000 BPI representative of the total population.
    • Production of survey material: 22,000 questionnaires (11,000 pairs) in 7 languages (then 9) sent in 378 customised packages to the sample centres throughout the country. Each pair combines a questionnaire in French with a questionnaire in one of the other languages spoken by the speakers of the destination centre. Each pair of questionnaires has a unique code and identifier to allow identification on the survey website to respond in digital format.

On 8 March 2020, a second wave of the survey was sent to the 224 centres with the lowest return rate.
The protocol has been coded in R and will soon be available on GitHub.Please do contact me for any additional information.
