The 2023 John Bates Clark Medal is awarded to Gabriel Zucman

The 2023 John Bates Clark Medal of the American Economic Association (AEA) has been awarded on Tuesday, May 2 to Gabriel Zucman, Chaired professor at the Paris School of Economics, Professor at the Ecole normale supérieure (ENS-PSL) and Director of the EU Tax Observatory hosted by PSE.

This exceptional distinction is awarded to American economists or economists practicing in the United States under the age of forty, for their significant contribution to economic science. Gabriel Zucman is rewarded for his extremely innovative and significant work in the field of taxation, tax evasion in particular, and inequality.

The American Economic Association says that “Zucman’s research provides some of the best evidence on the importance of tax evasion, pushing the economics profession to appreciate that this phenomenon is more important than previously thought.” She specifies that this award recognizes Gabriel Zucman’s “impressive achievements.

This award recognizes his research initiated at PSE during his thesis work under the direction of Thomas Piketty and developed at the London School of Economics, then at the University of California, Berkeley.
