- STRICOT Maëlle (PSE) : Understanding the determinants of sexual violence (under)reporting: Evidence from France
- RésuméSexual violence and its underreporting are major social problems. Encouraging victims to report to formal authorities is key to preventing and combating this violence. This paper explores the determinants of reporting sexual violence to the police using data from the French victimization survey. I show that the reporting propensity is higher for victims with low socioeconomic status, living in urban areas, or having suffered an assault involving physical injuries. I also analyze rare information on the reasons for not reporting to unveil the mechanisms behind these findings, which allows me to discard some frequently advanced explanations. First, I provide suggestive evidence that victims of higher socioeconomic status report less not because they fear social recrimination but due to better knowledge of the criminal justice system and the material and psychological costs associated with reporting. Second, the sizable impact of physical injury occurrence is unlikely to be explained by better prospects of winning the case thanks to this solid evidence. Instead, it seems driven by better alignment with the cultural norms stemming from the "classic rape" stereotype. Overall, the results suggest that the low reporting of sexual violence stems more from distrust in the criminal justice response than fear of inadequate police intake.

- KNEBELMANN Justine : Property Tax under Weak Enforcement
- RésuméI combine administrative and survey data to characterize the current functioning of the property tax in the urban region of Dakar (Senegal). This paper aims to assess the Property Tax Gap; to identify determinants of being in the tax net; and finally to discuss whether a weakly functioning property tax ends up being more or less progressive than the (theoretically not progressive) tax defined by the legal framework. This is work in progress using baseline data for an RCT that is in the field.

- RésuméEconomic behaviors are deeply influenced by social norms and, in particular, ethno-cultural hierarchies. However, the emergence of such hierarchies through individual interactions and the complex interplay of interests between multiple ethno-cultural groups have not been properly analyzed in the existing literature. To address this gap, I propose, in this paper, a three-group (one majority and two minorities) evolutionary game model of the emergence of social hierarchies in a multi-cultural country context. I show that (1) social hierarchy views tend to be shared by most individuals within and across groups, (2) transitions towards new hierarchy views may be achieved through inter-group alliances emerging at the level of group members rather than group leaders, (3) egalitarian hierarchies are very unlikely to persist in the long run, (4) multi-level ethno-cultural hierarchies play a crucial role in preserving the majority group's domination and avoiding the emergence of an egalitarian hierarchy, (5) the arrival of a new minority in a society is often beneficial to the old minority in the long term, either due to a direct improvement in status or to an indirect improvement in self-identity caused by the recognition of the new minority, and (6) the speed of cultural convergence between groups depends on the prevailing social hierarchies and on society's cohesiveness.

- KSEBI Ilham : Are they Over Satisfied? The Gap between Subjective and Objective Position of Immigrants in the Italian Labour Market
- RésuméAccording to objective standards, women and immigrants have worse labour market achievements than men and locals, yet they report relatively high levels of perceived income and job satisfaction. In this paper, I use a large sample of workers taken from the Italian labour force survey to investigate this matter in two steps. First, I separately asses the determinants of the objective and the subjective work perspective by stressing the role of the gender and the migration status, together with other personal characteristics of workers and labour market variables. Moreover, I estimate the gap between subjective and objective work perception by breaking it along many dimensions. The estimation results reveal that gender has a stronger effect on the gap with respect to the migration status. In addition, I show that a substantial subjective gap is observed among immigrants coming from developing countries.

- RésuméI consider an agent that has the possibility of finishing a one-stage task over a discrete time interval, while at every point in time he is confronted with an outside option. The one-stage task has an uncertain cost of completion. I assume that the agent knows the distribution of the outside options, but only learns the value of each outside option after its realization. Therefore, the agent is faced with the difficulty of finding the optimal timing of when to exert effort in order to finish the task, while also being uncertain about how many trials he will need to complete it. I consider families of decision rules where the agent sets thresholds, such that for all realizations of the outside option below the threshold the agent chooses to try to finish the task. From the optimal solution it follows that a fully rational agent sets thresholds that are a continuous, convex and increasing function of time, where the threshold at the last period is equal to the expected value of the task. The optimal solution therefore shows that a certain degree of delay is optimal, caused by the decreasing option value of waiting over time. The paper continues with a hypothetical analysis of the conditions under which agents depart from rationality by analyzing the effects of various biases and forms of bounded rationality. These results shed light on novel mechanisms that cause procrastination.

- RANALDI Marco (PSE) : On the Measurement of Functional Income Distribution
- RésuméThe present work proposes a framework for the analysis of inequality in income composition. Hinging on the recent work by Ranaldi (2017), we here propose a metric of income-factor polarization, the Income-Factor Polarization Index (If), that captures the extent to which two income sources, notably profits and wages, are polarized across the distribution of income. We measure income-factor polarization as the distance between the Polarization Curve for Income Source and the Zero-Polarization Curve, suitably normalized. The former is the cumulative distribution of income source across the population with individuals being indexed by their income rank, and the latter is the benchmark of zero inequality in income composition, defined as the situation in which each individual has the same population share of profits and wages (Ranaldi, 2017). The greater the distance, the higher the polarization. We show that the index narrows down to a single one the two conditions for the rising share of capital income to increase overall income Gini introduced by Milanovic (2017), which is: If > 0. The methodology is finally illustrated via an empirical application on the case of Italy. Here is the corresponding working paper : https://halshs.archives-ouvertes.fr/halshs-01379229v3/document

- RésuméDespite close economic ties, China and Japan have a rocky relationship. In China, resentment against Japanese actions during World War II and current territorial conflicts over the Diaoyu/Senkaku islands runs high and has resulted in numerous (violent) anti-Japanese demonstrations. At the same time, a very popular form of entertainment in China are historical TV dramas set during the Sino-Japanese war with very unfavourable depictions of Japanese soldiers. Using high-frequency Weibo (Chinese version of Twitter) data, I investigate how these TV shows affect anti-Japanese sentiment in China
