Environment

The Paris School of Economics (PSE) aims to develop economic research and disseminate its results at the highest international level. It brings together a community of 135 researchers and 166 PhD students, and offers a range of cutting-edge courses in economics (Masters, PhD, Summer School, etc.). PSE was founded in 2006 by CNRS, EHESS, ENS, École des Ponts-ParisTech, INRAE and Université Paris 1 Panthéon Sorbonne. A young, fast-growing structure, PSE works with a large number of public and private partners in France, Europe and abroad. It develops and supports a number of innovative projects, including the World Inequality Lab (WIL).

The World Inequality Lab (WIL) is a PSE research laboratory focused on the study of global inequalities. For almost ten years, the WIL has worked to produce evidence-based research on the various dimensions of inequality, both within and between countries. The results are disseminated through research papers, reports, events and media interventions. The WIL also hosts and maintains the World Inequality Database (WID), the most extensive open-access public database on global inequality dynamics. The WIL team is made of about twenty researchers and professionals based at PSE, and works closely with an international network of over 100 academics affiliated with the WID.

Position

You will work under the direction of the WIL Data Coordinator, who is responsible for managing and updating inequality data. Your main role will be to assist the central team in updating data for macro and distribution series published on the World Inequality Database. Additionally, you will be tasked with helping various regional coordinators to produce and update inequality data worldwide, by consistently and systematically combining different existing sources (surveys, tax data, national accounts).

Profile and skills

You are interested in measuring and monitoring global inequalities. You aim to join a research environment strongly focused on international issues, maintaining close ties with a broad network ofresearchers worldwide. You will work under the supervision of the WIL’s Data Coordinator, who is responsible for managing and updating inequality data.

We are seeking candidates available for a full-time position for 12 months in 2024-2025, such as Master’s students wishing to take a break before starting a thesis or applying for other positions, or Master’s students wishing to take a break between M1 and M2.

Furthermore, here are the expected technical skills:

Proficiency in programming with Stata (proficiency in other programming languages is a plus).
Organizational skills, particularly regarding project management involving a large amount of code.
Ability to collaborate effectively on coding tasks.
Fluent in English (both oral and written).
Interest in income and wealth measurement issues, at both macroeconomic and microeconomic levels. Interest in comprehensive data compilation and harmonization to inform public and academic discourse.
