Activities
Several activities are on the chair’s agenda:
- The organization of events, conferences and thematic workshops aimed at presenting and discussing work at the frontier of international research ;
- The recruitment of post-doctoral fellows ;
- The funding of doctoral fellowship ;
- The writing of notes to enhance research work and make it available to a wide audience ;
- The drafting of an annual activity report.
Objectives
Led by Julien Grenet and Nina Guyon, the aim of this research chair is to identify the causes of inequalities in access to education, and to identify the policies and actions best suited to correct them. This is a key issue for all citizens, which concerns not only public decision makers but also civil society and philanthropic groups that devote much“ effort to supporting young people and their families.
An ambitious chair, interfacing research and action
The Ardian Foundation, the DEPP and the PSE intend to make this “Education Policy and Social Mobility” Research Chair a privileged space for fruitful interactions between research and practice. The objective is to improve the level of education of those segments of the population in most difficulty by identifying the most effective levers. Through original and rigorous work, the scientific teams hope to contribute to efficient and innovative education policies that take advantage of new technologies.
From early childhood to higher education, the researchers focus on allocation procedure related to school choice, social diversity, management of the teachers, evaluation of pedagogical methods, gender inequalities, tutoring policies and positive discrimination.

Steering Committee
To coordinate its work, the chair has set up a steering committee made up of the Chair’s holders, Julien Grenet, Nina Guyon, Jean-Olivier Hairault, and the partners’ representatives: Carole Barnay (President of the Ardian Foundation), Ana Coric (Ardian Foundation), Raphaëlle Muhlmann-Eytan (Ardian Foundation), Thierry Rocher (DEPP) and Magda Tomasini (Director of the DEPP).
PSE Partners
The Ardian Foundation was launched in 2010 on the initiative of the employees of Ardian, one of the world leaders in private investment. Under the aegis of the Fondation de France, it promotes social mobility and the inclusion of children, adolescents and young adults from modest backgrounds.
Since 2020, the Ardian Foundation has placed early childhood initiatives at the heart of its activity in order to strengthen its social impact, while continuing its activities in other age groups.
It supports the projects of around 50 associations in Europe, Asia and America (France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Luxembourg, Switzerland, China, the United Kingdom, the United States, Chile) of up to €3.2 million (in 2022). It operates in the following areas:
- Early childhood
- Access to education and culture,
- Social inclusion of young adults.
Ardian’s employees are also at the heart of the Foundation, as many are committed to it. They put their skills at the service of supported associations and projects.
The Ardian Foundation also funds research in the field of education to identify and develop future avenues for action.
The DEPP (Directorate of Evaluation, Forecasting and Performance of the Ministry of National Education, Youth and Sport) exercises its competencies in evaluation and performance measurement in the fields of education and training. It contributes to the evaluation of the policies conducted by the Ministry. The animation of educational research is part of its missions.
