Being a PPD student

RESOURCES

Curriculum: 2023-2024

We remind you that if you are accepted to enter the M1, you are strongly advised to go through the following list of textbooks during the summer:

  • Intermediate Microeconomics, H.Varian, Norton, 8th Edition (2010)
  • Macroeconomics, O.J.Blanchard, Pearson, 7th Edition (2017)
  • Introductory Econometrics - A modern approach, J. Wooldridge, South-Western - Cengage Learning, 5th Edition (2012)

Online resources for PSE master students and professors:

Using the Online Resources site, the instructors can make the following available to students:

  • Post class documents;
  • Information related to course participation; Students can informally register for advanced elective courses using the form on the course website located within the Online Resources for PSE Programmes. Students have to sign up in advance in order to receive any course-specific information by email.
  • Post the grades of the courses
  • Consult the evaluations of their courses In the interest of improving course offerings, the PSE Program requires students to evaluate their courses. At the end of each semester students evaluate via an online interface the coursework they have taken. The evaluation, properly speaking, consists of an anonymous questionnaire. Students can also share their observations about the course thanks to a dedicated online forum. These evaluations are subsequently collected and used, in a constructive manner, to improve course quality.

Using the Online Resources site, the students can have access to:

  • The documents that the professors make available to the students
  • The grades of the courses they are registered in
  • A transcript of records (as soon as the grades are available)
  • Evaluate the courses that they are registered in

INTERNSHIP

At the end of the M1 year, students have to complete a training of at least two months in an institution responsible for the design or the evaluation of public policies.
Because of the specific type of training that is targeted, students are assisted in their research by the teachers of the master’s programme.

*Students must be aware that under French law, a student intern is not entitled to any stipend if the internship is less than 2 months, and 400 euros per month is longer than 2 months. However, there are two caveats: 1) some two-month interns receive a stipend anyway; 2) international organization even based in France are free to set their own rules (some do pay a stipend some do not)
These internships are a great opportunity for the students to work in institutions such as AFD, the World Bank, INSEE, IRD, J-PAL, the French Ministry of Economy, Finance and Industry, the United Nations, the OECD, among others. It’s a great and enriching occasion for them to have a first-hand work experience in a field that they are passionate about.
Some examples of missions that our students had during their internships are:

Campus Life

PSE – Paris School of Economics develops economics research of the highest international standard and disseminates the results. It brings together a community of 140 researchers and around 200 PhD students, and offers teaching in Masters, PhD, Summer School and Executive Education programs at the cutting edge of the discipline.
PSE is located in the South of Paris, on the Jourdan Campus. At 10 minutes away from the Montsouris Parc and the Cité Universitaire Campus, PSE is a great place for researchers and students to carry out their activity.

The campus has many facilities that the PSE students can benefit from such as:

  • A beautiful garden
  • A modern building (inaugurated in 2017)
  • Fully equipped classrooms
  • An IT lab with computers that provide economics softwares (Stata, R..)
  • A specialized library (managed by the ENS but accessible to all the PSE students via a multifunctions card)
  • A leisure room
  • 2 study rooms
  • A small cafeteria (a bigger canteen should be available in one year’s time)
  • A foosball and ping-pong table

The students association Synapse organizes frequently events at PSE for the students such as: movie nights, foosball and ping-pong tournaments, barbecues. In addition, the students have the chance to get to know each other and bond during soirées and parties. (Wine and cheese party – on the banks of the Seine, Halloween Party, Christmas Party, It’s party time ! etc.). For more information on the event organized by Synapse click here.
