Who are the professors?

Program Director: Gilles Saint-Paul is Chaired Professor at PSE and holds a visiting position at New York University in Abu Dhabi. He has a Ph. D. in economics from MIT and has previously held positions at DELTA, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Birkbeck College and the Toulouse School of Economics. He has been a member of the French Council of Economic Advisors and of the Munich-based EEAG group. His work is on macroeconomic theory, in particular growth, labor market issues, and political economy. His publications include The political economy of labor market institutions (Oxford University Press, 2000) and The tyranny of utility (Princeton University Press, 2011) as well as numerous publications in international journals. In 2007 he was awarded the Yrjo Jahnsson medal, which is given every two years to the best European economist under 45.

Tobias Broer is Professor at PSE and a Researcher in quantitative macroeconomics interested in the interaction between inequality and macro-policies and dynamics, the origins and consequences of limited risk sharing, and the formation of expectations. He holds a PhD from the European University Institute, and is currently professor of economics at the Paris School of Economics, director of the PSE - Banque de France Chair International Macroeconomics, and associate professor (on leave) at the Institute for International Economic Studies at Stockholm University. His work is published in journals such as the Review of Economic Studies, the Journal of Financial Economics, and the Journal of the European Economic Association. His current work studies, for example, biases and heterogeneity in expectation formation, and the consequences for aggregate demand of heterogeneous labor market risks.

Axelle Ferrière is Assistant Professor at PSE and Research Fellow at the CNRS. Following her PhD at New York University in 2015, she continued her research at the European University Institute until 2018. Her research primarily focuses on fiscal policy and redistribution, through the lens of heterogeneous-agent models. She is also interested in the quantitative effects of uncertainty. Her work has been published in journals such as American Economic Journal: Macroeconomics and Journal of Monetary Economics.

Jean-Olivier Hairault is Director and Chaired Professor at PSE and Professor of Economics at Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, at PSE, and at IZA Research Fellow. He joined Paris 1 in 1997 after holding positions at University of Paris-Dauphine and University of Lille 1. He is currently the Director of PSE. He is also Director of the Macroeconomic Observatory of Cepremap. Jean-Olivier’s research focuses on business cycles and labor market dynamics; his recent main topic is the source of unemployment fluctuations, with a particular interest for a life-cycle approach and the relative contribution of job separation and job finding rates. He is also interested in the impact of structural changes and polarization on job reallocation, and the role of labor market institutions. His research is published in Journal of European Economic Association, Economic Journal, Journal of Public Economics, International Economic Review and European Economic Review, among others.

Francesco Pappada is an Invited Professor at PSE. He has previously been a Senior Research Economist at Banque de France and held post-doctoral and visiting positions at HEC Lausanne, University of California Berkeley and Einaudi Institute for Economics and Finance. His research focuses on the aggregate consequences of firm dynamics, including the cleansing effect of recessions, and the impact of firm heterogeneity on exchange rate fluctuations. He is also interested in fiscal policy and the implications of imperfect tax compliance on sovereign default and fiscal consolidations. His research is published in Economic Journal, IMF Economic Review and European Economic Review, among others
