Summary

Chasseurs d’États is the fruit of an exceptional investigation into the professionals of the pursuit of sovereignty – judges, lawyers, investigators and asset hunters, but also senior civil servants – whose focus of action is located in the courts of New York. The author tells the story of how it became possible to take legal action against states that, freed from the colonial yoke, nationalized their productive apparatus and expropriated American investors. U.S. economic diplomacy, hand in hand with the capital markets, ensured that the alternatives promoted by the countries of the Global South were defeated, and that New York law became the world standard for financial deals and disputes.

Benjamin Lemoine is a sociologist and researcher at the CNRS and the Maurice Halbwachs Center (École normale supérieure, Paris). His thesis won an award from the French Political Science Association. In 2018, he was awarded the bronze medal of the CNRS. He has published L’ordre de la dette (2016, 2022) and La démocratie disciplinée par la dette (2022) with Editions La Découverte.
