Holistic Gains: The Impact of Energy Renovations on Mental Health and Well-Being in France

This study delves deeper into the impact of energy renovations in France, highlighting the positive effects on thermal comfort as well as the mental health of residents. Using the propensity score method to minimize selection bias, the analysis reveals that although renovations significantly improve psychological and physical well-being cause health problems linked to precarious living conditions, they do not necessarily lead to a reduction in energy expenditure. This lack of cost reduction could be explained by the rebound effect, where improving energy efficiency leads to increased consumption rather than financial savings. ¨res. The results of this research highlight the importance of considering the multidimensional effects of energy renovations, which, while improving thermal comfort and mental health, do not guarantee reduction of energy expenditure. These findings call for a reassessment of energy efficiency policies to better align occupant well-being objectives with economic sustainability imperatives, as suggested by the recent economic literature on the externalities of energy
