Alexander Yarkin, a postdoctoral fellow at the Luxembourg Institute for Socio-Economic Research (LISER) and the University of California at Davis (UC Davis), has been awarded the 2024 Junior Research Prize in Immigration Economics awarded by the PSE Chair in International Migration Economics. The €2,000 prize was presented by Anna-Maria Mayda (Georgetown University), president of the jury, during the 14th Conference on Immigration in OECD Countries. This annual conference, co-sponsored by the PSE International Chair in International Migration Economics, gathers researchers and experts from around the world to explore the determinants and economic impacts of immigration for host countries.

Yarkin’s award-winning paper, entitled “Is the ‘Melting Pot’ Still Melting? Internet and Immigrants’ Integration,” investigates how Internet expansion in immigrants’ countries of origin influences their socioeconomic integration in the United States. The paper examines the impact of immigrants’ exposure to home-country internet on English-language proficiency, naturalization rates, and spatial and occupational segregation. His work sheds light on the role of the Internet in immigrant integration processes and offers an original and relevant perspective on the contemporary challenges of migration.

The PSE International Migration Economics Chair extends its warmest congratulations to Alexander Yarkin for this recognition and thanks all participants and partners for their continued commitment to advancing migration economics research.
