The Labor Chair provides funding for doctoral theses over a period of three years.

The Labor Chair is a research chair hosted at PSE-Ecole d’Economie, in partnership with the Ministry of Labor through two departments, Dares and DGEFP, France Travail and the Ville de Paris. The chair aims to attract the best students and stimulate research in order to achieve a better understanding of the evolution of work as well as the dynamics of employment, wages and unemployment.

The Labor Chair offers thesis funding over a period of three years for a gross monthly salary of 2470 euros.

  • For the period 2025-2028, a PHD contract is offered on “labor” topics.
  • Funding for two 4th year of PhD is proposed for the year 2025-2026.

Doctoral students recruited under the chair receive a favorable welcome (access to data) in the chair’s partner institutions. They also have the same working environment as other doctoral students in economics at PSE, in addition to specific supervision within the Labor Chair (seminars, events, etc.).

Procedure

The application file must contain the details of a doctoral student, a thesis supervisor and a thesis topic. It must include the candidate’s CV, their grade transcripts for undergraduate and master’s level courses, a two-page presentation of the research project, a letter from the supervisor and up to two letters of recommendation. Great attention will be paid to the originality and quality of the data that candidates intend to use in their work.

The application file consists of the candidate’s CV, the transcript of grades for L3, M1 and M2, two pages presenting the thesis and the year’s research project, a letter from the supervisor and may include up to two letters of recommendation.

The application file must be sent before May 8, 2025 in electronic format to eric.maurin@ens.fr and dominique.meurs@psemail.eu, mentioning in the subject line of the email the type of application (PhD thesis or 4th year). Shortlisted candidates will be invited to present their research project at an interview at the Paris School of Economics at the end of May. The candidates will then be selected by the scientific committee of the Labor Chair.
