The urgency of the climate crisis is clear: we now need to change all our production activities and professions in order to decarbonise them, and reduce the overall impact of our economies on the environment. This far-reaching transition is alternately presented as a means of achieving wealth-creating green growth, or as a process that will inevitably lead to economic decline.
Overcoming this divide, Mireille Chiroleu-Assouline reviews the state of knowledge on the effects of the energy transition, and more broadly the ecological transition, on employment. She shows that this identification work is an essential prerequisite for the implementation of macroeconomic and support policies to achieve a just transition, one that is not achieved at the expense of people currently working in the most polluting sectors.
