Recent years have been marked by a proliferation of industrial policies and protectionist measures. These have emerged against a backdrop of heightened strategic rivalry between countries that are highly integrated commercially, but whose economic and political systems tend to diverge. China, the United States and the European Union come to mind in this context. However, these are not the only polities that engage in industrial policy. The workshop organized by the Globalization Chair on May 24th assembled world-class researchers to discuss the state of the art in research on Industrial Policy in the Global Economy. The workshop highlighted how the inter-connectedness of the global economy shapes the impacts of industrial policies in ways that are sometime unexpected.
