Abstract
Despite the hopes nurtured by democracies after the Second World War, despite the attempt to build an international order based on multilateralism and despite nuclear deterrence, war keeps reigniting in many parts of the world, including on Europe’s doorstep. Since 2022, the war in Ukraine has rekindled old debates: the rationality and moral justification of war, the nature of strategic interactions between actors in the conflict, the mobilisation of the civilian population, the legitimacy and effectiveness of sanctions against the aggressor. It also raises new questions. On the Russian side, is the war the subject of a consensus within the elites? For the European Union, is it an opportunity for greater cohesion, as seen in the coordinated reception of Ukrainian refugees? This conflict also illustrates the range of weapons and targets of war, from the most traditional, such as water, to the most modern communication tools.
The twelve contributions in this volume address these questions using tools from different disciplines in the social sciences and humanities. Most relate to the war in Ukraine, but some take the reader back to the Middle Ages or Antiquity, while others look at how the history of war is written or represented in pictorial works.
