Western democracies have undergone a deep transformation in political divides over the past 70 years.
To better understand this evolution, Amory Gethin, Clara Martínez-Toledano and Thomas Piketty analyzed over 300 elections across 21 countries. Several key dynamics emerged from this study: the shift in voting based on education, “multi-elite” systems, and the role of new parties. Amory Gethin explains them in this video.
Researcher at the World Bank
Amory Gethin is a researcher at the World Bank and holds a PhD from the Paris School of Economics. His work focuses on the interaction between public policies, inequality and political conflict. He co-directed the collective work Clivages politiques et inégalités sociales. Une étude de 50 démocraties (1948-2020), which retraces the transformation of political divisions in contemporary democracies from a historical and global perspective.
