Electricity and roads are key drivers of rural development in low and middle-income countries. But is there evidence of complementarities?

Using data from a substantial share of India’s more than 600,000 villages, Oliver Vanden Eynde and Liam Wren-Lewis show strong complementarities between electrification and road access. When both infrastructures are provided together, dry season cropping increases significantly, leading to improved living conditions in rural areas.

Oliver Vanden Eynde is a senior researcher at the CNRS and a chaired professor at PSE. His research focuses on political economy, violent conflict, and infrastructure provision in developing countries.

Liam Wren-Lewis is a Professor at PSE and a Research Director at INRAE.  His work focuses on issues related to agriculture and the environment in developing countries, with subjects of interest including infrastructure, land rights, and structural change.
